Teenagers Fighting Electronic Cigarettes in the United States

The fight over the electronic cigarette has taken an interesting turn in the United States. A group of teens are currently fighting to ban the sale of the products because they claim that the electronic device may encourage teenagers to begin smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. The electronic cigarettes that are targeted are those that come in flavours such as vanilla, chocolate and even cherry. The teens believe that the flavoured nicotine encourages teenagers to become addicted to nicotine and eventually choose tobacco cigarettes.

There is a flaw in the argument, however. While it may be advisable to ban the sale of nicotine cartridges and electronic cigarettes to those under age eighteen, completely eliminating the sale of the product is inadvisable. What is remarkable about the controversy over electronic cigarettes is the lack of concern over the sale of tobacco cigarettes. Instead of banning a product that helps so many people, monitoring the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors is a better approach.

Electronic cigarettes have helped countless people control their use of nicotine and cut back or eliminate completely their use of tobacco cigarettes. The device is a healthy alternative that eliminates the 4000 chemicals that are found in traditional cigarettes. The smoke that comes from an e-cigarette is merely a water vapour that does not have an odour or affect anyone around the smoker. Not only does the device help the health of the smoker, but it also eliminates the negative health effects of second hand smoke.
Unfortunately, the outcry against these products threatens their existence in the marketplace. One may wonder about the inconsistency of fighting against a product that can help many people improve their health while many people are ruining their health every day with tobacco cigarettes.

The electronic cigarette also enables smokers to get nicotine in a manner that they are accustomed to while staying inside restaurants and pubs. This is one feature that users appreciate tremendously. The smoking bans that have taken place all over the world have affected businesses and smokers. Many smokers have decided that it is simply not worth the trouble of going out and enjoying their social life in light of the smoking bans. The effect that this has had on the pub and restaurant industry has been devastating.
The electronic cigarette has stepped in and helped resolve some of these issues. Pubs in the UK are now selling the device right on site to help encourage smokers to come back and enjoy a night out with friends. Not only has the electronic cigarette helped smokers get their nicotine in the way they are accustomed to, it also promises hope to these businesses that have been decimated by smoking bans.

One wonders why there is such a backlash against the product. The tobacco industry quietly sits back and watches their only real competition get blasted on a daily basis in the news. It should give one pause about the current situation between tobacco cigarettes and the healthier electronic variety and wonder where all the uproar is really coming from.

  1. Are these people kidding me?

This is, without a doubt, the STUPIDEST argument I’ve ever heard. This is *NOT* smoking. I challenge everyone out there on the internet to find *ONE* company marketing these things to underage kids.

  2. Marc Black says:

Teens are passionate, but can be “dumb” at times due to lack of knowledge. This is ridicules.

There is always a matter of someones opinion, which is the case here. Just following the crowd per say and do not have any real facts to go on.

Ecigs are not marketed towards teens, tobacco is though. That has been proven but no one does anything about it…

What’s more is I keep reading where electronic cigarettes are being classes int he same category as tobacco (due to the nicotine) which is just ludicrous.
