FDA to ban E-cigarettes

It looks like the FDA are going to announce a ban on the e cigarette. A statement from the FDA’s Office of Legislation is as follows:

“E-cigarette kiosks are all over town, including Montgomery Mall. They’re being advertised as a safer alternative to cigarettes. Our concern is that this might introduce nonusers to nicotine use. This is a drug delivery device. The content of the products have not been analyzed by FDA. To be sold, they would have to be approved by the agency.”

“Our concern is that this might introduce nonusers to nicotine use.”  This I think is a rather poor defense of their decision.   And what if it does? The main harm cigarettes cause comes not from the nicotine but from all the toxins present in the tobaco. They seemed happy enough to approve nicotine gum and patches.

E-cigarette companies have not taken kindly to this news either. Smoking Everywhere is now in the process of suing the FDA over the ban. They claim that the FDA are overstepping their boundaries and the e cigarettes need to go through the standard drug approval process.
