The FDA has just recently released a study detailing what they have found in some 19 different brands of electronic cigarettes.
They found that half of the samples they tested contained nitrosamines which is basically the same carcinogen found in real cigarettes while some also contained diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze. Apparently, some of the devices which were purported not to have any nicotine in them had low levels of the chemical.
Part of the reason why the FDA is trying to restrict sales of the electronic cigarette is that many are made in China where the devices are not placed under strict regulation under health and safety laws. These electronic cigarettes have the potential to be harmful to the user’s health.
Ever since the electronic cigarette’s arrival in the states a year and a half ago, the FDA has been suspicious of this new device and has tried to ban it. In response, a leading electronic cigarette manufacturer sued the FDA. The case is still ongoing but this hasn’t dampened sales of the device. Thousands of people over the world are snatching up the device mainly for it’s two main benefits: you can smoke it despite the smoking ban and it is a safer replacement to tobacco.
Tobacco companies are also worried that the electronic cigarette will lower sales of their tobacco cigarettes. The tobacco industry is a big business and it is no wonder that they are concerned.
